The Northwest Paso Fino Owners and Breeders Association was started in August 1977 by Judy and Tom Carr of Puyallup, Washington. They got together with about 17 people and elected officers for a Board of Directors. The regional boundaries included Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Western Montana, British Columbia, and Alberta Canada.

Today some 36 years later, the Northwest Paso Fino Horse Association (NWPFHA) has approximately 75 full time members, and the region’s boundaries include Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, and the Canadian Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan.

Our website, http://www.nwpfha.com, offers a glimpse of what our members are doing with their horses as well as featured articles from our Roving Reporter and Mr. Ed. Always entertaining and full of horse keeping ideas, we add new information weekly to keep our readers informed.

The main purpose of the NWPFHA is to promote the Paso Fino breed by creating regional activities for our members and their horses. There are trail rides, clinics, endurance rides, back country packing, parades, drill teams, expositions, and shows, including all breed and gaited shows. This diverse range of activities gives all members the opportunity to participate throughout the whole year.

The NWPFHA participates in a number of expos throughout the region, including the Northwest Horse Fair and Expo in Albany, Oregon; the Idaho Horse Expo in Nampa, ID; and the Horse Affair and Trade show in Boise, ID. In 2008, 2010, 2011 and again in 2012, members participated in the Calgary Stampede. 2012 was the 100th Anniversary of the Calgary Stampede and was a huge success. Our breed booth was the most popular of all the breeds represented. We also represented the Paso Fino in the Pendleton Roundup Parade. Our members were wearing traditional costumes that were donated to our Northwest Association and are available to our members for shows and parades.

More and more members are participating in the Paso Fino Horse Association (PFHA) Ticket to Ride program, and sanctioned trail rides are increasing. There are campouts at the lakes, in the mountains, in the desert, or at the Pacific Ocean Coast of the Northwest Region. Clinics with professional trainers are increasing, and there is often a waiting list to participate in the clinics. Our 2013 Annual Meeting will feature Dee Myers, participant in “America’s Favorite Trail Horse” and the NW Mountain Trail High Point Series Champion to name just a couple of her accomplishments.

The Oregon State Fair Horse Show, held in late August each year, is the NWPFHA’s pointed Paso Fino show. There are a wide range of Paso Fino classes for PFHA members to show off their fine horses to a large audience. By promoting the Paso Fino horse with events like these, we have an ever-increasing membership through the sale of this exciting breed. We work hard in the Northwest Region to promote our wonderful Paso Fino horses, provide educational opportunities for our members and their horses, as well as the general public, and to have fun at all times. We always welcome new members to our region. Contact us at nwpasofinohorse@gmail.com or through our website http://www.NWPFHA.org.
