MAPFHA, the Mid America Paso Fino Horse Association was established in 1979 by a small collection of Paso Fino enthusiasts who met for a trail ride and a meeting. From that original group, Orville and Pat Cummings and Walter Benhardus are still active in breeding and training Paso Finos. Since then our region has grown as knowledge of the smooth gait became more widely known.
Our five state region encompasses Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota as well as some members from outside the region. Membership is close to 200 single and family members who own under 500 registered Paso Finos. We feel our members involvement is various horse activities will increase public awareness and increase our numbers. Members of our region enjoy a variety of activities such as;, fun shows, PFHA shows, organized trail rides, Minnesota Horse Exposition, breed demonstrations, parades and of course, pleasure riding.
Those who prefer to compete in an arena setting participate in our regional show the Heartland Classic as well as other regional shows and the PFHA Grand Nationals.
The trail riding and pleasure riders can participate in our numerous weekend trail rides or our two week camp and ride excursion somewhere outside of the region, which is held each fall.
We offer high point awards for regional participants in the Heartland Classic and are now approved as a sponsor for point accumulation for the PFHA Pleasure Riding point system.
Each spring we host a Chili Bake and Charity Auction to benefit the region. Members have an opportunity to donate items as well as purchase items via a wining bid. A fun time is had by all as they enjoy good food, games and socializing with fellow members.
We publish our regional news in the Messenger which is published six times per year with articles on training, care, tips, member biographies, advertising, committee reports, announcements and PFHA Board information.
Anyone can join MAPFHA, regardless of geographic location, by writing Mid America’s President.
