José M. Colón Rodríguez is a PFHA Golden Life Member. José was born in Puerto Rico and has been involved with Paso Fino horses since he was 5 years old when his grandfather gave him his first Paso Fino, Cofre. It was his grandfather who instilled in him his love for the horse. Since a very young age and through his teenage and college years, José helped his grandfather at the farm caring for their horses. José and his grandfather spent many hours riding horses and enjoying their passion for the Paso Fino horse at shows and at the farm. He currently owns Paso Fino horses for breeding, showing and pleasure riding.
José has served PFHA as chair of the PFHA’s Judges and Stewards Committee, and a member of the Education and Clinics Committee, the Registration Advisory Committee, the Hearing Committee and USEF’s Paso Fino Committee. José has presented at PFHA and International clinics on topics such as Public Speaking, Judging Parameters, Judging Systems, Equitation and Ethics.
José is a senior certified Judge by the PFHA and USEF. He also holds the International Paso judge certification issued by Federacion Tecnica de Jueces de Puerto Rico. As a judge, José has had the opportunity to judge some of the most important shows and horses in the USA, Puerto Rico and Internationally. He has judged the 2014 & 2016 PFHA Grand National Championship Shows, Spectrum, Asheville, Extravaganza, the 2012 Youth Mundial de Jinetes y Amazonas held in Miami, the 2013 Mundial held in Miami, and the 2017 Mundial held in Colombia, and many other national and international competitions.
José holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Puerto Rico at Rio Piedras, and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Wilmington, Delaware. José resides in Delaware where he is a partner and director of a company which is dedicated to the development and maintenance of information technology systems with operations in Puerto Rico and the United States.
