SUNSHINE PASO FINO HORSE ASSOCIATION

SUNSHINE PFHA Sunshine PFHA was founded almost 30 years ago (July 27, 1972) by Paso Fino owners in and around Palm Beach County, Florida. A few months later, on December 27, 1972, Sunshine became the first region in the State of Florida to join PFHA (then PFOBA). Plans were already underway to hold the first ever weekend of two separate Paso shows. This took place in February of 1973, two separate shows on two different days with different judges for each show. Up until this time, shows were only one day. We are honored to be one of the oldest regions in PFHA, and we’ve sure come a long way! We strive to appeal to a broad range of Paso Fino enthusiasts by offering a wide variety of activities -- beach rides, camp outs with our horses, clinics, drill teams for both adults & children, driving, exhibitions, parades, showing, team penning, trail rides, and year end awards. To make sure all members stay abreast of our many activities, we publish a monthly Newsletter full of upcoming local and national events and info on meetings, members and happenings. We are the first regional Association to have a web site on the Internet, as well. You are invited to check it out -- www.sunshinepaso.org -- and we welcome any comments you may have. Sunshine hosts “all Paso” shows several times each year, our 3-day Fiesta del Sol in the fall, our brand new, 1-day Summer Sizzler in August, and our 2-day Spring Jubilee in the spring. We hold our 2- and 3-day shows at the Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington, Florida, an internationally known show facility and site of the Winter Equestrian Festival (as seen on ESPN). This site is well received by all exhibitors. Our Friday night welcoming events and Saturday night showcase exhibition and exhibitors’ party are such hits that we can’t wait to do them again! Our new show, the Summer Sizzler, will be held at The Pose Grounds. We continue to work hard to ensure our upcoming shows are every bit as exciting as the previous ones. Sunshine has a number of horses and riders showing and socializing at The Posse Grounds’ local, monthly, all breed pleasure shows. They have six Paso classes for us at these shows, including two for “12 & Under” riders and they also have terrific year end high point awards. With this in mind, we add one or two PFHA Local Shows to our show circuit. Held in conjunction with The Posse Grounds’ shows and using those six Paso classes plus Fino 12 & Under and Paso Costume, it is very well received by both exhibitors and spectators! We do team penning at The Posse Grounds monthly, as well. It’s so much fun to show others how truly versatile Paso Finos are! They have great “cow sense”, and we are actually earning the respect of the “traditional penners”. We enjoy participating in Okeechobee’s Speckled Perch Festival Parade each March, all decked out in our finest. The crowd really enjoys seeing our Pasos strut their stuff! The hot summer months find us hitting the surf with our horses for our monthly beach rides and swimming. We now have members coming many miles from all over Florida to join in the fun. It’s really great to see how our Pasos love the Ocean! Also during the summer, right before the 4th of July, you will find our drill team, Aurora, with others from our club at The Great Lake Park Fireworks Festival, doing exhibitions as part of the entertainment. The cooler months find us camping (with our horses, of course) - usually at DuPuis Reserve near Indiantown or at The Florida Ag Center & Horse Park in Ocala. What a chance to see natural Florida with our horses – and to socialize with some of our members who live up that way! October brings a finale to our show circuit with our banquet and high point awards ceremony. This is one of the few events our horses can’t attend! December finds us decked out in our finest Spanish costumes for the Palms West Christmas Parade in Wellington. We’ve won First Place, Equestrian Unit, numerous times. And then a lot of us are right back in costume and/or drill team attire for the South Florida Fair in January each year, where we usually put on six exhibitions over the three weekends of the Fair. As you can see, all year ‘round we can be found – somewhere, doing something with our Pasos! Sunshine members really have fun at all we do, whether it be “pleasure” or “show”. This is reflected in our fantastic turnouts at all events, not only riders, but also those who come to socialize and cheer the riders on. Sunshine has experienced phenomenal growth the past few years. We are infused with excitement and enthusiasm and are always looking for opportunities to promote these wonderful horses!
